Yellow Vented Bulbul

The yellow vented bulbul is a commonly seen resident in our forest. We always see them flying around in pairs! They’re very cute and fluffy and like to bathe in our pool.

Description: Yellow vented bulbuls (Pycnonotus Goiavier) have adjusted well to humans and are found nearly everywhere in Singapore except in the deep forest. They are mostly brown with a white face and chest, with a little olive crest on the tops of their heads and black eyes, as well as their characteristic yellow under their tails :3 They usually go around in pairs. You will probably have heard their pleasing bubbly calls before. Be sure to look out for them in Singapore’s parks and gardens, they will usually be there!

Status: Very common resident breeder.

Diet: They usually eat berries and small fruits (e.g. figs) but they may also nibble on small shoots, eat certain insects or sip nectar.

Fun fact: The name bulbul derives from Persian: بلبل‎ meaning nightingale! This could be because of the songbirds’ melodious songs.

Today, a bulbul was standing really close to a White Throated Kingfisher! We tried to get a clear shot of both of them together but the camera couldn’t focus on both of them. Instead, the kingfisher became a unique smudge of colours!

More bulbul snuggles! Bulbuls just love squeezing onto a single metal pole together!

After a bath in the swimming pool, they always stand by the pavement to dry off and end up looking fuzzy like this:

Bulbuls SUNBATHING! Both of them had a bath and did the same thing – lean on their sides and expose their chest fluff to the sun! They also angle it perfectly so the sunlight shines on them 😀

      1. That’s amazing! We leave fruits for it in a pot and we see it feed the juveniles everyday! It’s so precious to watch.
